Greetings, Safari users! Are you excited to turbocharge your web browsing experience? As a Safari loyalist, you must already be aware that this isn’t an ordinary web browser. It is your gateway to the vast digital universe. By tinkering with the browser’s settings, you can personalize your browsing experience and take it a few notches higher.
So, what are you waiting for? Keep reading to familiarize yourself with some tips and tricks that will enhance your browsing experience.
Use Reader View for All Websites
Do you want to enjoy distraction-free reading? This is where Reader View comes to the rescue! When this feature is turned on, you can enjoy a clutter-free website page and also view it in an easy-to-read format.
So, whenever you come across a messy website on Safari, you can go to Preferences > head to the Websites tab > choose Reader from the left pane. You can configure the website that is currently open to use Reader View automatically by selecting On in the dropdown menu. You can set this same setting for all websites by selecting On in the dropdown menu beside When Visiting Other Websites.
Once this feature is enabled, all websites that support it will automatically load in Reader View.
Enable cookies
Although cookies have a bad reputation, they are required for some websites to function properly. So, the trick is to know how do you enable cookies on iPhone and other devices without giving up your privacy. You can enable cookies by opening Safari > toggling off Block Cookies > turning on Prevent Cross-Site Tracking > turning on Hide IP Address > Trackers and Websites.
With these settings, you can enjoy a healthy balance between everyday usability and privacy.
See the Entire URL in the Address Bar
The main domain name is shown in the address bar, and this setting is by default. Although this makes the web browser appear minimalist, it hides valuable information. This includes your location on a website.
So, you can choose to see the full URL by opening Safari > Preferences > going to the Advanced tab > checking the Show full website address box there. After this, Safari will display the full URL.
Stop Auto-Playing Videos
Imagine this: You are browsing a website in the middle of the night, and a video starts playing out of nowhere. It didn’t even ask for your permission! If you are sharing your room with someone, it would certainly not be a good conversation with your roommate.
Auto-playing videos are a nuisance. They are distracting and noisy and also consume a lot of system resources. If you have too many tabs open, you will have to fumble your way through the crowd to find the one that is playing this awful video.
Why put yourself through so much pain when you can simply block auto-playing videos? Go to Preferences > the Website tab > choose Auto-Play from the sidebar > configure the websites to Stop Media with Sound or Never Auto-Play Videos.
Enable Picture-in-Picture for Videos
The picture-in-picture mode is a handy feature, and it is available in Safari. Thanks to this feature, you can pop out a video you are watching to a small window while continuing your other tasks. This window can be moved anywhere. It can also be placed on top of other windows.
You can use PiP in Safari to play YouTube videos by clicking and holding the volume button in the address bar and then choosing Enter Picture in Picture. You can exit this mode by clicking the Exit button found next to the Pause/Play button. The video will pop back into the browser.
Although the feature works perfectly, it doesn’t work with all video services. You need to check which online video services support this feature.
Speak to Safari
You don’t always have to type and tire your fingers. You can embrace the power of voice control. Go to Preferences and enable Dictation. This will summon Siri whenever you need to navigate websites, fill out forms, or search the web. You can enjoy hands-free browsing.
Tame the Tab Tsunami
The tab tsunami is a real nuisance! If you have too many tabs open, you will find yourself drowning in the crowd. Fret not because Safari is equipped with the Tab Groups feature that allows you to organize your tabs. You can neatly organize the tabs and name the collection so that the grouped tabs can be accessed easily. You can even share these grouped tabs with your friends or colleagues when you need to collaborate.
